This is the first plasma TV my husband and I have owned, but we've seen many others. We just got ours today, and it is phenomenal. I already had high standards for Panasonic, and I've not been disappointed. This was a brand new unit in a sealed box, and it has been on all day now. So far, I haven't seen any type of burn-in whatsoever (problem common to plasmas), no black grass at the bottom, no weird dark/light areas, no lightening up after switching to a dark scene, nothing but perfect normal television. We haven't upgraded to the HDTV package at Charter yet, but even our standard cable channels look fantastic on this TV (which was a big thing I was worried about). The colors are bright, vibrant, and eye-catching, the movement and scene-changing is smooth, and everything is properly proportioned (the guy that set it up for us adjusted the settings with my dad's help). Some things on standard TV are slightly blurry (minimal things, like the Nickelodeon logo in the bottom corner of the screen), but that seems normal across the board for plasmas when watching standard def TV. All in all, I am so incredibly happy that we bought this TV. I will update my review if anything changes or happens, but this TV is definitely recommended!

Pixel Resolution -

I have had my tv for a year and a 4 inch blue shaded line has appeared on the left side of the screen and I called panasonic because I was still under warranty. they set up an appointment with a local repair shop. they sent him some parts to replace but this did not fix it. He called them and told them it did not work so now they're sending new parts again. but he thinks its the whole screen thats bad. so now this has taken a two weeks to fix it.

Contrast ratio is one of the specifications that people seem most interested in when looking for a new HDTV. The contrast ratio is the difference between the darkest dark scene and the brightest bright scene the screen can display. A nice high contrast ratio, like 8,000 to 1 or higher, gives the picture a more lifelike and sharper feel. The exact ratio depends a lot on the way the manufacturer chooses to measure it, so maximizing the contrast ratio by choosing one make of HDTV over another is a dubious plan. But, there is one sure way to improve things, regardless of the TV specs:

The key is to "trick" your eyes a little bit. Your eye's iris (the "aperture" of your eye) will constrict in bright light and dilate in darker light, right? If your TV room is completely dark, your eyes will be dilated and sensitive to low amounts of light, so you will have to turn the brightness down on your screen to make the dark areas appear totally black. This also reduces the brightness of the bright scenes, thus reducing the apparent contrast ratio.

If you place a dim light source, like a small lamp, behind the TV in your otherwise dark room, your iris will contract a bit and allow you to turn up the brightness a little. You will still see black as completely black, and will have more brightness in the bright scenes, thus increasing the apparent contrast ratio and making the picture look better. Constricting your iris also increases the sharpness of your vision, just as stopping down the aperture of a camera lens increases sharpness and depth of field. And the dim, diffuse light will not cause glare on the screen like a direct or overhead light would.

Of course, it also helps to find out if a particular HDTV actually has as good a contrast ratio as the manufacturer claims. One way to find this out is to look at HDTV reviews where actual customers compare notes. With the help of a technically-minded nephew, we purchased this TV last year. The three main considerations for us were: 1) Budget-less than $1500.00 2) Space-needed to fit in the area we had our last TV (42" wide. This TV just made it with less than an inch to swivel, and it needed to fit on our current AV table. 3) Quality - HDTV capable, plasma, easy setup This unit is really great. All the features are terrific, with the input/output connections well placed, and easily accessed on the rear of the unit. I am soon getting a new DVD player to use with it, but not a Blu-Ray player because they are still too pricey for me. When we only watch standard, non-HDTV tv then there isn't a big difference between this unit and our last tv. The picture is okay, and you have to watch some shows with the black boxes on the side (ratios can be adjusted) However, this unit really shines when we watch the HDTV channels from Time/Warner cable. The HDTV package is extra $$$ but it is well worth it. Movies are incredibly detailed and rich. Sports are amazing. You can really catch the detail of the action. Recording HDTV shows look as though we are seeing real-time cable. This product is a year old, so Panasonic probably has newer models out. I highly recommend you include this unit in your HDTV search. Great bang for the buck (when you have HDTV service and a good DVD player....)
